I heard about his death this morning on Canada AM... What a terrible loss.
Jackie and I watched a blooper show one night on him. We laughed so hard we were crying.

Personally, I think the baby and the croc bit looked more risky than it was. But hearing that no one who was actually there in the actual audience gave the incident a second thought, and that it became an issue when the media got a hold of it, and then hearing afterwards about the number of people you didn't (see on the media released photos) that were watching every single movement that croc did (who were also in radio contact with eachother), and knowing that Steve Irwin was a professional crocodile ... handler(?), it probably wasn't really risky.

Another view: it looks risky to cut open a guys chest, then cut open his heart, then sew it all back up at the end, but it's routine for cardiac sugeons... It's what they do...

A little stat about rays though, in recorded Australian history, there are only 3 cases of this type of death. We have WAY more chance of dying in a car crash, second hand (or first hand) smoking, or even a tree falling us... But when it's your time to go, you have no choice but to obey...

I did like the guy--- always seemed so enthusiastic about everything he was doing-- it was bound to happen, living on the edge of basic instinct---! Speaking of which , there are newborn/newdead baby mice on our doorstep--- these ones didn't even get a chance to dance--- DOESN'T ANYONE HAVE COMPASSION FOR RODENTS-- MIKKIE, WHERE ARE YOU WHEN I NEED YOU???

Hi Mike, yeah, the media love to sensationalize-- I'm sure neithr he nor his wife would jeopardize the life of their child--- of course the picture they're showing of him today is the one of him with the baby and resurrecting that whole shabang again-- nice to hear from you, don't go swimming near any of those rays!!!!!!!love you

I just read another article, and a marine neuroscientist (?) said, "It was extraordinarily bad luck. It's not easy to get spined by a stingray and to be killed by one is very rare," Collin said.

I have had little ones sit within inches of my feet, they are so placid, you have to watch where you step, and I've seen big ones a few metres from me while fishing, but there is never fear, and I doubt there will be even now... It was a freakish thing, and plain bad luck...

wow! I can hardly believe it. His enthusiasm was certainly his major selling point. Too bad for his family...

Came as a complete shock to me - I always enjoyed his shows. What a "freak" accident. How ironic that a man so trained and skilled in animal behavior could succumb in such a way - however - They said the Titanic was unsinkable, but look what happened!

I also feel very sad about this, especially for his family. They were so close! Ironic, that after all his time with truly dangerous animals, he was killed by a relatively harmless one. From what I hear on TV they rarely attack, it's a defensive thing only. And only three people (Steve being one of them) have ever been killed by them. This is such a sad thing.
